BLACK BEACH PROJECT

Reynisfjara is one of Iceland’s most famous and most photographed places, so when severe winter storms changed the beach last winter, the images travelled quickly. Many people said goodbye to Reynisfjara, describing it as forever changed or lost, without acknowledging that this is a dynamic landscape that could change again. And that is exactly what has happened. What we publish can shape how people see a place, and it can have real consequences for the businesses, tourism and communities connected to it.

These images are a part of a project for the landowners of Reynisfjara following the dramatic changes to the beach last winter.
The purpose is to provide an accurate visual record and show how Reynisfjara looks today. And as you can see the beach has returned almost completely to it’s former state. So if you had plans to visit Reynisfjara but changed them because you heard the beach was gone, you can put it back on your list. Reynisfjara is still here and waiting to be explored.

All drone footage was shot with permission and by request from the landowners.
